Choosing a hot water system

There are many different styles of hot water systems on the market today and three of the more common styles are listed below. Each system has its own advantages and disadvantages however the type of system you install is usually dependent on the location, demand, available space, sizing of the pipework and your budget.

ELECTRIC STORAGE HOT WATER SYSTEMS

Advantages:
  • Very versatile – they can be installed underneath the kitchen sink, in a linen cupboard, next to your washing machine or in your backyard.
  • Large range of shapes and sizes
  • Cheaper to buy and install
  • Easy to repair and parts are readily available
Disadvantages:
  • They can take up a large amount of room
  • Higher running costs than gas storage units
  • Lower life expectancy when compared to tankless systems
  • Limited supply of heated water

GAS STORAGE HOT WATER SYSTEMS

Advantages:
  • Straightforward system that has been around for years and works well
  • High efficiency units available
  • Lower running costs and faster recovery times compared to electric storage units
  • No electricity required to operate
Disadvantages:
  • They have to be installed outside (or inside with a flue)
  • Limited supply of heater water
  • Lower life expectancy compared with tankless systems
  • Higher running cost (compared to tankless systems) as it is constantly re-heating water to keep it at a set temperature

CONTINUOUS FLOW / INSTANTANEOUS HOT WATER SYSTEMS

Advantages:
  • Delivers hot water on demand – You will never run out of hot water
  • Small in size and can be installed in a variety of locations
  • Longer life expectancy compared to storage hot water systems
  • Highly energy efficient
Disadvantages:
  • Installation cost can be higher as pipework generally needs to be upsized
  • Require an outdoor power point to operate
  • Multiple units may be needed on large houses with a high demand
  • More expensive to buy, service and repair
